The Commanding General, in common with the officers and men of this
command, is called upon to mourn the loss of a most gallant officer,
CoL. J. RiciiTER Jones, 58th Pa. Vols., who fell at the head of his
Regiment, on the evening of May 23d, whilst repelling an attack on
the outposts.

Col. Jones won the admiration of all in this department by the inde
fatigable, able, and gallant manner with which lie tilled the arduous
duties of Commander of the Uutpo.sts. «^

He died whilst yet enjoying the triumph of a victory won by hia valor
and counsel.

To the service, to this Department, iimi io his Regiment, this death has
been a sad loss, and to all In re, and to those at home whom he
loved, the Commandinj^ (ieneral offers his most sincere sympathy.

May his bright example lead many to iread the ardn-Mis path of duty
with as pure an appr.^ciation of duly, and with as firm unswerving

tread as he.
All the flags in this Department will be carried at half mast for the three
days following the receipt of this order, and at this Post, half hour
guns will be fired from Forts Totten and Rowan, from sunri.se to
sunset, to morrow, May 27th.

Another Hirlyr ta the Cause.

The war for free government is claiming
the blood of the bighost and mo8t favored,
as well as of the poorer and uoltnown.

JoDN RjcnTER Jones, born in 1804,
practiced law and was elevated to the
Bench in Philadelphia, but about 1849
retired to Sullivan coyuty, to enjoy ease
and quiet, in the bosom of his funiily and
delights of literary and agricultural pur-
suits. A Hunker Democrat he was of the
strictest .sect, and an apologist for Slavery
and the South. But, at heart, he was
above all party bonds — he was a Patriot,
lika most men of Welch origin. His
faiher, Rev. Dr. H. G. Jones, (first Chan-
cellor of the Uuiversity at Lewisburg) was
ehoson a Regimental Chaplain, at Rux-
borough, in the war of 1812. His grand-
father. Rev. David Jones, served as Chup-
lain in the Revolution, in the Indian W'lr
following, and again in 1812, when 75
ye«ra of age. 0( this period is the follow-
ing anecdote, related by Prof. Anderson
in SprNguc's Annals of the American
Baptist Pulpii :

"On his way to join the Army of the North,
Chaplain Jones ride from Xcw BruiiswicU to
rs'ew York in the stage, in company with a
number of KPnllemen, ail of whi>m seemed to
mke a lively inicrest in the political a(f<iirs of
the liav. Among them was a young lawyer,
who was criticisins. in no mea.sured terms,
ihc policy and spirit of President Madi.«on —
'A wealc admini.strnlion — a miserably weak
administration,' was the epithet which he
applied to the powers which then were. Mr.
Jones had sal quietly, taking but little part in
the discussion. But now he woke up. 'Ves,
sir,' said he, 'it's a weak administration — mis-
erably weak.' Some surprise was manifested
at this concession from a man of .VI r. Jones'
well-known poliiical principles. 'Yes, indeed,

Madison were half the man he ought to be' —
looking full in the eye of the young lawyer —

lawyer, with a great deal of warmth, 'if you
were not an old man, yon would not sav thai
to me.' 'Yes, yes, sir' — replied Mr. Jones,
shaking his head energetically toward the
angry youth — 'and if I were not an old man,
you would not dare to say that to me!'"

In July, 1861, Judge Jones began to
rai.se a Regiment, (the 58th P. V^.,) which
has performed valuable pcrvices. On the
22d ult., near Newborn, N. C., ho acted
as Brig. General, and surprised a Rebel
camp on Gum Swamp, capturing its

' artillery, its munitions, 50 horses and
mules, 200 prisoners, and atter destroying

, the works retired to bis camp — all without

; los.". The next day, a Rebel force

i appeared, but did no damage, until a
sharp-shooter, concealed, fired a ball
which struck Col. Jones in the breast :

, be fell into the arms of his orderly,
exclaiming "My God — my King I" and
expired. His remains were sent North
for burial, with all the honors of war.
His last letter to a brother-in-law, dated
18th ult., has the following impressive

j "It is better for the great interests of man
' to expend the whole present generation at the
! North, than to consent to the separation of

the American nation. We are not ready

! for peace vet. If it were patched up l)y nom-
inal restoration of the Union, il would be but
a hollow truce. We must whip the sleuth into

proper respect for us. The party which

attempts to embarrass the Government, whe-
ther its measures be just or not. will be as
'teetotally damned' as the old Federalists were.

over, and then settle whether it ought to have
thrown A's or B's goods overboard to lishten
the ship. This is the only patriotic doctrine —
the only doctrine sanctioned by the practice
of other nations in similar emergencies, and
the only policy which the American people
will eventually sustain."

under the charge of his nephews, Captain Cecil Clay
and Lieutenant Antony Clay, of Company K. Prior
to its de))arture from Newbern General foster paid
all duo respect to the mercory of the brax'eandls-
meuteO Colonel, and gave him a brigadier cencral's
honors. An rioqueat sddress w.ns delivered bv the
P.ev. Dr. Stone, chaplain of a laassachusetta 'regi-
ment, and as the vessel which bore the body left the
port all the Hags were placed at half mast. The
body reached New Tork on Saturday morning, and
it is evpf cted th.-it it will be interre"d at the family
burial ground early this week.

Hi.s death will cause universal regret, for the
countn* cannot afford to lose such brave and bold

When the rebellion broke out, Colonel Jones, from the
